The board of trustees of the prestigious performing arts venue has approved a measure to be renamed the Trump-Kennedy Center, according to a statement from the White House.
White House Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt declared online that the board's decision was unanimous, attributing it to "the extraordinary job President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building."
"This is destined to be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt achieve new levels of success and grandeur," Leavitt added.
The proposed move is expected to be highly controversial, especially in Washington, D.C., where the center has been an beloved institution since its founding and christening for President John F. Kennedy.
Background of the Venue
Shortly after assuming the presidency, President Donald Trump replaced all the center's existing board members and appointed supporters in their place. The reconstituted board later moved to elect Trump chairman.
The president was instrumental in securing approximately $257 million in federal funds to cover major renovations and operational expenses at the historic venue.
Original Concept
The vision for a national performing arts center originated in the 1950s. Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the 35th president, in 1963, the future venue was christened the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
