Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
